Saliva Testing

A common way to assess adrenal hormones is by taking a diurnal cortisol curve saliva test.  The Diurnal Cortisol Cx4 Saliva Hormone Test, by ZRT Laboratory, is designed to measure the levels of the hormone cortisol, taken four times in a 24-hour period (morning, noon, evening, and bedtime). The adrenal gland produces the hormone cortisol in response to stress. Prolonged high cortisol production can lead to chronic fatigue, "adrenal burnout" and other health problems.

Cortisol production is normally at its highest 30 minutes after waking and declines steadily during the day, reaching its lowest point at bedtime ensuring sound sleep. Those with adrenal gland dysfunction may experience insomnia, weight gain/loss, and sex hormone imbalance.

Why Saliva Testing?

Saliva testing is a non-invasive collection method where patients collect their saliva in plastic tubes in order to measure hormones like cortisol, estrogens, progesterone, and androgens. This non-invasive Diurnal Cortisol Cx4 saliva collection is ideal for patients because it allows them to collect their sample in the privacy of their home or office.

Why Do We Test Hormones in Saliva?

Steroid hormones in the bloodstream are 95-99% bound to carrier proteins, and in this form are unavailable to target tissues. Saliva testing measures the amount of hormone available to target tissues – the bioavailable amount. For this reason, saliva testing better relates to specific symptoms of excess or deficiency, and is a good option for monitoring hormone therapy.

Some analytes cannot be tested using immunoassays, the methodology used for most of our saliva testing. For that reason, ZRT Laboratory developed an LCMS Saliva Steroid Profile using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This profile tests a broad range of bioavailable hormones and hormone metabolites in one convenient saliva sample collection. LCMS testing allows for accurate reporting of estrogens down to extremely low levels, such as those seen in men, children, and people using aromatase inhibitors, and includes a test for ethinyl estradiol, 3 hormone blockers, and melatonin. To learn more about what you can test with the LCMS Saliva Steroid Profile, view the LCMS Provider Data Sheet.

ZRT is one of the first labs to measure hormones in saliva, and helped establish the method that made saliva hormone testing commercially viable for health care providers and patients around the globe.

What makes ZRT Laboratory Stand Out as Today's Most Advanced Saliva Testing?

  • Ranges Adjusted for Supplementation: Unlike other labs, patients do not need to stop hormone supplementation to use ZRT’s testing because we have ranges adjusted for age, menstrual status and supplementation types. This is the ideal method for tracking the effectiveness of hormone treatments.
  • No Pooling: ZRT does not pool patient samples, meaning that we don’t mix multiple daily samples together to get an average hormone level. Instead we measure hormones from a single morning sample, which represents the peak of daily hormone production – the optimal time to measure.
  • Extraction: ZRT is the only lab to perform an extraction process for saliva testing, which separates hormones from background contamination. This is the only way to assure accurate test results for low-concentration hormones such as estradiol.
  • Industry Standards: ZRT initiated and manages the industry-wide standards program called the Saliva Proficiency Inter-laboratory Testing Program – which enables laboratories to regularly evaluate and improve saliva testing accuracy.

DUTCH Complete Hormone Test by Precision Analytics
What is the DUTCH Complete?

The DUTCH Complete takes hormone testing to a whole new level. This test looks at sex hormones and their metabolites, the overall diurnal pattern of free cortisol, and the total distribution of cortisol metabolites in addition to OATs, which provide insight into nutritional deficiencies, oxidative stress, gut dysbiosis, melatonin, neuroinflammation, and more.

Healthcare providers can use this valuable tool to optimize hormone health and address hormone-related symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, and mood swings.

Learn more about this test by viewing the provider information sheet. You can view a sample DUTCH test analysis by clicking here for female, and here for male.

Hair Analysis (TEI Profile 1) - Test 36 Minerals & Toxic Metals

We offer the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Test (Profile 1 HTMA) as a very economical way to chart your nutritional status and/or detoxification progress. The multi-element assay of hair (36 elements) is performed by a federally licensed laboratory called Trace Elements, Inc.

Each analysis comes with a 2 page bar graph illustration from the lab itself showing the measurement of toxic metal levels, mineral content, significant mineral and toxic element ratios found in the hair sample.

Organic Acids (Urine) Test (OAT) by Mosaic Diagnostics

A Nutritional and Metabolic Snapshot

Organic acids are products of the body’s metabolic pathways. Evaluation of these downstream metabolites from various metabolic pathways provides insight into important areas related to gut health, mitochondrial dysfunction, neurotransmitter status, indicators of detoxification and macronutrient breakdown and nutritional status. This makes organic acid testing a valuable tool to assess the functional need for essential nutrients, diet modification, antioxidant protection, detoxification, and other therapies.

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) provides a comprehensive nutritional and metabolic snapshot of an individual’s overall health. The OAT measures 76 organic acids from one easy to collect urine sample.
